The Parish of Drakelow is first recorded as Dracan Hlawe in a grant of land made by King Edward in 942 A.D. and a translation of this name is ‘Dragon’s Mound’ which indicates it to be a burial ground thought to have a guardian spirit. No trace of its early history as a burial ground was found until workmen involved in the construction of Drakelow ‘C’ power station found buried remains in January 1962.
